MSDC proposes car parking charges in Lindfield
Published: 20 March 2025
Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) recently approached the Parish Councils in Lindfield, Cuckfield, Hassocks, and Hurstpierpoint & Sayers Common, as well as some other local organisations, to seek their views on potential changes to parking regimes in the larger villages, which for Lindfield would include the imposition of parking charges.
In Lindfield Parish Council’s (LPC) view, MSDC’s consultation was not clear on precisely what issue(s) it was seeking to address nor whether the proposals would, in fact, address them. LPC was concerned that the proposals would be likely to have a negative impact on residents, High Street businesses and visitors, and objected accordingly. Please see LPC's Response and MSDC’s initial consultation.
Notwithstanding LPC’s objections, MSDC’s Cabinet met on Monday 10th March and approved their outline proposals. Whilst specific details are awaited, it is understood that MSDC will now proceed to seek West Sussex County Council’s (WSCC) agreement to vary the current parking arrangements and that part of the process with WSCC will entail a public consultation. LPC would encourage residents, businesses and visitors to respond to this when it is launched.
In the meantime, one of the village’s residents has set up a petition at Petition · Say NO to Parking Charges in Lindfield - Lindfield, United Kingdom · Change.org which residents and business may wish to consider. For clarity, LPC has not been involved in setting up this petition and is not a decision maker on this issue, as the village car parks are owned by MSDC and High Street parking on WSCC Highways land is managed by MSDC.
